Home Energy Challenge Competitions

The Home Energy Challenge is a chance to learn about energy conservation, and for Team Members to vie against each other in friendly competition. Once that friendly local competition is complete and the Challenge Period is over, then the Regional Competition begins!

The competitions are an opportunity for teams to prove who learned the most and which team can best put the conservation techniques into practice.

There are two competitions within the Home Energy Challenge:

Schools can have unlimited teams. Each team must have five (5) or more students. A team advisor with multiple teams must register multiple times or have another adult sponsor that team. Students in the same team must be in the same grade.

Data Collection

Students will need to obtain three months of prior year's energy bills in order to compete. If a student is unable to do so, they can still compete in this challenge by participating in the poster competition.

The Regional Competition is when Teams get the chance to compete with other teams around the country for prizes and national recognition. Participation is a snap!

  1. There is no need for teams to register for the competition. Teams are automatically registered when the Challenge Team is created.
  2. For the Regional Competition, teams submit one (1) narrative to the Team Advisor. The narrative will be judged according to the Regional Scoring Rubric.
  3. The Team Advisor uploads a PDF of the narrative to the website.
  4. The Team Advisor must formally submit the narrative for judging by March 31st, 2014.
Note: After documents are submitted they can no longer be edited.
  5. The judges will review and assess the submissions and make awards to selected contestant teams.

Poster Presentation

For kids who do not have access to energy bills, they can still participate in the Home Energy Challenge by demonstrating their knowledge on a Poster Presentation. Teams must have at least one team member registered as a Poster competitor. After the team is created, they are eligible and automatically registered for the Regional competition.

Note: If your team has no Energy Poster Contest participants, your team is not eligible for the Energy Plan and Poster Contest.

To compete, each competing team participating in the Poster Competition at the Regional level must produce one plan and one poster as a team.

The process is as follows:

  1. Teams with one or more poster competitors either choose the best energy plan and poster from the individual team submissions or create a new plan and poster to represent the team. The plan and poster will be judged according to the Regional Poster Scoring Rubric.
  2. The Team Advisor uploads a PDF of the plan and poster to the website.
  3. The Team Advisor must formally submit the plan and poster for judging by March 31st, 2014.
Note: After documents are submitted they can no longer be edited.
  4. The judges will review and assess the submissions and make awards to selected contestant teams.
